Parents can now breathe a sigh of relief as they may be eligible for refunds when their kids unknowingly made virtual purchases on the popular Fortnite video game. Over 37 million people are being notified by email about this opportunity for compensation, as part of a legal settlement between the game’s maker, Epic Games, and U.S. regulators.
The Legal Settlement
Last year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a settlement with Epic Games, where the company agreed to pay $520 million in penalties and refunds. The complaints against the game revolved around children’s privacy and the game’s payment methods, which tricked players into making unintended purchases. As part of the settlement, $245 million was set aside for customer refunds.
Who is Eligible?
People who are eligible for refunds include Fortnite users who were charged in-game currency for items they did not want, between January 2017 and September 2022. Additionally, those whose children made charges to their credit card without their knowledge, between January 2017 and November 2018, may also be eligible. Lastly, individuals who had their account locked after reporting wrongful charges to their credit card company are also included.
How to Claim
If you believe you are eligible for a refund, you must submit a claim by January 17. This can be done through the designated process outlined by the FTC.
Fortnite’s Commitment
After settling the case in December, Epic Games announced that it had implemented additional safeguards to prevent unintended purchases in the game. In a recent statement, they directed users to the FTC’s page for more information regarding the refund process.
