Exploration in Genshin Impact’s 4.0 update has become more challenging and exciting with the introduction of new mechanics, particularly in the Fontaine region. Alongside the underwater sections, there is still plenty of land to explore in this region. While underwater exploration offers a refreshing twist, the new features added in the 4.0 update have also added layers of difficulty to the puzzles and challenges in the game.
Genshin Impact’s Fontaine Region Mechanics
The 4.0 update introduces the Arkhe mechanic in Genshin Impact, which includes two new energy types exclusive to the Fontaine region. Characters, enemies, and puzzles in the region are aligned with either Ousia or Pneuma energy, in addition to their primary Element type. When these Arkhe energies come into contact with creatures or objects aligned with the opposite energy, it results in the Annihilation reaction, which can stun enemies or progress certain puzzles. While some puzzles may have temporary Arkhe energy infusion stations nearby, most of them require players to own characters permanently infused with the energy types.
Initially, players only have a few options for obtaining a character with Pneuma energy. They can use the Traveler or acquire Lyney, a five-star Pyro bow user from Event Wish Banners. On the other hand, obtaining a character infused with Ousia energy may become more challenging in the future, once the free availability of Lynette, a four-star Anemo sword user, ends. This could potentially limit players’ ability to solve certain puzzles in Fontaine.
Obtaining characters aligned with the new energy types unique to the Fontaine region can be a barrier for players, as most characters released before the 4.0 update are not aligned with an Arkhe energy type. This limitation may become easier to overcome as more characters from the Fontaine region become available. However, for now, players have limited options when it comes to tackling these kinds of puzzles.
Fontaine’s Underwater Combat and Rewards
Fontaine’s underwater combat levels the playing field, requiring players to use a specific set of weapons and abilities for these encounters. Combat encounters are prevalent throughout the underwater sections and are often combined with other puzzle mechanics. It is recommended for players to use Fontaine characters with high HP and defense stats for underwater exploration teams, as these characters naturally have Pneuma or Ousia energy.
In addition to the challenging puzzles, Fontaine also offers greater rewards compared to other regions in Genshin Impact. Mora containers found throughout Fontaine contain larger quantities of Mora, making it particularly rewarding for both new and longtime players to uncover the region’s secrets.
Genshin Impact is available on PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile devices, with a Switch version currently in development.
