Valve boss Gabe Newell order to appear in Court

Valve’s Gabe Newell has been ordered to appear in court as part of an antitrust lawsuit filed by Wolfire Games. The lawsuit, which was brought against the megacorp in 2021, has led to a request for Newell’s physical presence in court, despite his previous request for a remote deposition due to health concerns.

Newell expressed his health concerns and requested a remote deposition, but Wolfire Games insists that there is “insubstantial evidence to suggest that he is at particularised risk of serious illness” and wants him there in person.

Antitrust Lawsuit by Wolfire Games

Wolfire Games has brought an antitrust lawsuit against Valve, claiming that the company takes 30 per cent of all sales on its PC platform, which they believe is an unfair exploitation of publishers and consumers. They assert that Valve uses its market “dominance” to take “an extraordinarily high cut from nearly every sale that passes through its store.”

Despite the original claim being dismissed in November 2021, Wolfire Games was able to file a further complaint in May 2022.

Valve’s Response and Future Plans

Valve recently suggested that the technology to launch a handheld with an adequately beefy jump in power doesn’t yet exist, hinting that a Steam Deck 2.0 is not on the horizon anytime soon.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Valve engineers discussed the features being added to the new handheld model that were not possible in the original version. The company also revealed that it is working on multiple game projects targeting current Steam Deck hardware performance levels.
