Warcraft Rumble : Blizzard’s latest real-time strategy game
Blizzard has recently launched its newest real-time strategy game, Warcraft Rumble, on mobile devices. The game has undergone a soft launch in the Philippines as a technical test before its full release.
Tom Chilton and Vik Sarraf, developers at Blizzard, shared their excitement about the soft launch in the Philippines. It serves as an opportunity to ensure that everything is working smoothly and to collect device-specific information due to the wide variety of devices in the market.
The team’s goal is to expand the game to other servers as soon as possible, while also incorporating the lessons learned from the beta phase and gathering player feedback.
Inspirations and Learnings for Warcraft Rumble
The development team of Warcraft Rumble has gained insights from the teams behind Call of Duty Mobile and King, who have extensive experience in publishing mobile games. However, working at Blizzard presents its own unique challenges. They must carefully handle beloved franchises like Warcraft and Diablo, staying true to their origins while introducing fresh elements.
According to Saraf, Blizzard’s experienced development and design team is well-equipped to create games with engaging gameplay and strong core loops. They aim to maintain the essence of these cherished IPs while incorporating mobile gaming best practices into their designs.
Rumble without the Arclight
One significant change that came with the soft launch of Warcraft Rumble was the removal of “Arclight” from the game’s title. Originally, the RTS was meant to be called Warcraft Arclight Rumble, but the developers decided against it after considering player preferences.
The team recognized that players often shorten game titles, as seen with World of Warcraft becoming WoW and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft becoming Hearthstone. They explored various factors, including the length and arrangement of words in the title. They even considered reducing it to just “War,” as players might refer to it by its acronym. Ultimately, through beta testing, they discovered that Warcraft Rumble resonated the most with players.
Warcraft Rumble’s Future: A Possible PC Release
Blizzard has a history of releasing games on both PC and mobile platforms, such as Hearthstone. The success of games like Hearthstone on multiple platforms opens up the possibility of a PC release for Warcraft Rumble.
Chilton stated that the team will assess player demand to determine if a PC version is warranted. They acknowledged that Rumble differs from Hearthstone, as it was initially developed for mobile and may potentially make its way to PC in the future. The team also mentioned that they have no issues with players using emulators to play the game on their PCs.
While the future of Warcraft Rumble on PC remains uncertain, Blizzard is actively looking at player feedback and market demand to shape the game’s future development and expansion.
