Genshin Impact, the popular gacha game, faced numerous comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild when it was first introduced to the gaming world. Some even accused it of being a mere “clone” of Link’s open-world adventure. However, miHoYo’s president, Liu Wei, recently reflected on this stage of the game’s existence and shared his thoughts at the ‘Genshin Impact FES’ event. He acknowledged that while the team was initially proud when the closed beta was launched, they received unexpected feedback and faced certain “misunderstandings” that left some of their colleagues in tears. Although the president did not explicitly mention Zelda, he referred to the early stages of the game’s reveal as an “unprecedented crisis”. This was a challenging time for the team, as Genshin Impact’s similarities to Zelda prompted a passionate fan to destroy a PlayStation 4 in protest. Wei explained that many people who watched the closed beta video failed to grasp the game’s intentions, resulting in numerous misunderstandings. Consequently, the team was filled with worry, and even saw young colleagues in tears, questioning their actions and wondering where they went wrong. Despite these challenges, the team remained determined and fearless.

While miHoYo openly admitted taking inspiration from Breath of the Wild, they have always emphasized that Genshin Impact offers a unique and distinct experience. Despite the difficulties faced prior to its launch, Genshin Impact has now become a live service powerhouse, generating billions in revenue.

The Missing Switch Release

Genshin Impact had previously promised a release on the Nintendo Switch, but updates on this version have been scarce. In May of last year, an update indicated that the game was still in development for Nintendo’s hybrid platform. However, since then, there has been no news or information regarding its progress. Rumors have circulated in 2021 suggesting that technical issues may have impeded the release on the Switch platform.
