3D Systems' Geomagic Capture Brings 3D Scanning to Engineers
In a move to re-imagine the engineer's work desk, 3D Systems recently announced the release of Geomagic Capture, its new 3D family of desktop scanner and software tools for professional scan-based design and quality inspection. The company has integrated powerful scanning hardware and software into a package that provides seamless solutions for two applications: scan-based design and quality inspection. In early December, interested customers can view Geomagic Capture at the design fair EuroMold 2013 in Frankfurt, Germany, where 3D Systems will exhibit its new product. Earlier this week, the press was given a sneak peak during a press briefing and here is what is new on the menu.

Geomagic Capture for scan-based design allows engineers to incorporate real world objects into the design process. At the same time, Geomagic Capture is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing workflows with no extra software needed, according to Tom Charron, vice president of product development. Using Geomagic Capture scan-based design also saves engineers time by eliminating the difficulty in documenting and recreating complex shapes. Additionally, it slashes design iteration time when combined with 3D printing to create testable prototypes, added Charron.

Tailoring its new scanning package to the needs of its customers, 3D Systems offers Geomagic Capture in both plugin and design packages. While its plugin packages include Geomagic Capture for SolidWorks and Geomagic Capture for SpaceClaim, its design packages include Geomagic Capture for Design X and Geomagic Capture for Design Direct (formerly Geomagic Spark). Customers who use CATIA, NX, Autodesk Inventor, and AutoCAD can purchase Geomagic Capture for Design X, which scans parametric solids directly into those programs. No matter which package they choose, Geomagic Capture can improve customers' scan-based design capabilities.

While Geomagic Capture can be used to facilitate scan-based design, it can also be used as a tool for quality inspection. Utilizing state of the art blue light LED technology, the 3D scanning hardware and software can provide fast and accurate inspection of new parts. 3D Systems has also created tailored Geomagic Capture packages for its customers who are using it for quality inspection and offers Geomagic Capture for Verify and Geomagic Capture for Control. Featuring powerful first article inspection software, Geomagic Capture for Verify can be used for CAD comparison and has an extensive GD&T toolset. On the other hand, Geomagic Capture for Control is useful for automatic inspection of multiple parts and offers intuitive scripting for complete automation of part quality control.

Perhaps most noteworthy, 3D System's Geomagic Capture packages are disruptively affordable. Its plugin packages cost the least at $14,900, but its design and quality inspection packages are also reasonably affordable at $24,900 and $19,900, respectively. Such pricing will revolutionize the 3D scanning market, where currently a comparable 3D scanner costs at least $40,000, and the necessary processing software costs at least another $20,000, according to 3D Systems. Pricing for all the Geomagic Capture packages is as follows:
